Q1. In The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, Christie presents an unusual detective. Do you agree? Explain your views. Also discuss critically the significance of Poirot favouring “the little grey cells”.

Q2. Through the Looking Glass by Carrol is said to be very unlike most other works written for children during the Victorian period. Do you agree? Discuss.

Q3. “Philip K Dick’s Minority Report is a warning about utopia which can disintegrate into dystopia”. Do you agree with his view? Give a reasoned answer.

Q4. Explain in your own words the many ways in which Bhimayana breaks the conventions of the graphic novel, while also following them. Illustrate your answer with examples from the text.

FOR VH STUDENTS ONLY: Explain the conditions and reasons Ambedkar offers for writing Waiting for a Visa. Discuss the argument he builds in the text.

Q5. Discuss the importance of “cognitive estrangement” as a device in SF. Illustrate your answer with examples from at least two SF stories in the course.

Q6. In his essay, Christopher Pawling argues that ‘popular literature’ should be subjected to the same academic rigour as ‘canonical literature’. Discuss your understanding of his argument and give your views on it, while referring to one or two texts which you have studied in this paper, in order to clarify your stand.
